[ filed under: immigration education ] Brave New Foundation just released a new video featuring students who grew up in the U.S. but now face legal barriers to enrolling in college due to their immigration status: Since the DREAM Act died in Congress in 2006, various states are now attempting to enact versions of this bill to allow undocumented students who grew up here to qualify for in-state tuition and a path to legal status. The New Jersey In-State Tuition Bill will remove barriers to undocumented students seeking higher education in that state. In California, the state Senate’s education subcommittee approved a version of the bill by a vote of six to two. Meanwhile, undocumented young people are attempting to create a space of their own. Others who face deportation after living here their whole lives find that they have to start over in a country that is foreign to them. and they bring with them their “American” culture, values and entrepreneurism. |
