Some images of Athens after Riot

I finally have sometimes off from the media forum in Athens so i went to the neighborhood around Syntagma square area and took some pix. There was a big protest going on and i was kind of got swept up in it. So i took pix.

The building still smolders and smelled horrible. The locals said that it’ s not all students who went on riot but unrest youth of all kinds. A few people said that it’s the “Albanians and Gypsies who took opportunities to loot.” the burned out building above used to house high tech equipments.

In other word, it’s always the immigrant, the foreigner who’s at fault.

A lot of looting happened and a lot of buildings were set on fire. One store owner said he is planning to get a gun to protect his property. “The police won’t do anything. the fire department is overwhelmed.”

Lots of broken glass on the street. Lots of people standing around wondering what to do next. Neighbors gossip and complain to one another.

More riots are expected and a general strike is planned for tomorrow, wednesday. Hopefully it won’t be more than one day or else, I am in Greece for a while…

  1. “In other word, it’s always the immigrant, the foreigner who’s at fault.

But police have caught and arrested foreign nationals involved in the burning and looting:

“Thessaloniki authorities said the suspects included local residents and eight foreign nationals—Romanian and Albanian nationals. Police said that of the 16 suspects, 14 were charged with theft, while the other two were charged with attempted theft.”
