Immigration Reform and Right-Wing Extremism

The push for immigration reform this year by the Obama White House could energize the ranks of right-wing extremists, already agitated by the economic downturn, job losses, and the election of the nation’s first African-American president.

An April 7 intelligence assessment by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says far right groups have been aggressively exploiting illegal immigration as a recruitment and mobilization tool.

That trend’s likely to become even more pronounced as the immigration issue takes center stage, with Obama staffers and Democratic legislators seeking to hammer out an agreement on Capitol Hill.

The DHS report draws certain interesting parallels between the current economic and social climate and that of the early 1990s. In that period, the report says, “right-wing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to U.S. power and sovereignty by other foreign powers.”

The report notes that the rise in domestic militias in that period was punctuated by the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, after which militia activity declined due to the intense law enforcement pressure brought to bear on these groups.

Over the last five years, the immigration issue has become a call to arm for right-wing groups, including white supremacists and militias. The DHS report concludes that there is a chance of isolated violent attacks on immigrant targets if it’s perceived that the government doesn’t act on illegal immigration.

However, I would also add that if President Obama’s administration secures a path to earned citizenship for the country’s 12 million immigrants who entered the country illegally, then that will become a rallying cry for extremists who blame immigration for the country’s problems. A path to citizenship is what they call “amnesty” and is precisely the kind of action they don’t want to see.

The DHS report notes that prominent civil rights organizations have observed an increase in anti-Hispanic crimes over the past five years. And it also cites a few specific instances in which militia groups planned violent attacks on immigrants.

—In April 2007, six militia members were arrested for various weapons and explosives violations. A source alleged that those arrested had discussed and conducted surveillance for a machine gun attack on Hispanics.

—A militia member in Wyoming was arrested in February 2007 after communicating his plans to travel to the Mexican border to kill immigrants crossing into the United States.

The DHS report is unclassified but was intended only for the use of law enforcement agencies. It was spread publicly by conservative bloggers and twitterers. (Click here to download the report in PDF form).

The report already has been featured by conservative media personalities like Lou Dobbs, Michelle Malkin, and Rush Limbaugh. They say it’s an effort to put a chill on legitimate right-wing political dissent. Below is Lou Dobb’s segment on the report last night.

  1. The report warns about “right-wing terrorists.” I thought we were done talking about terrorists and terrorism in the US. What happened to “man-caused disasters?” You see, when we’re talking about right-wing Americans, then it’s OK to demonstrate the “politics of fear”...

  3. Yes, there is such thing as right wing terrorists. The days of fear mongering, hatred, and racism aren’t over. Billy Bob always needs a scapegoat to blame for his own failures in life. Before it was blacks, jews, Eastern Europeans, now it’s immigrant Latinos.

Thank God racism always loses in America. A comprehensive immigration reform with path to citizenship is a matter of when, not if!!! And with it, we must deport the Tancredos, Dobbs, Jeff Sessions, and other mistakes of nature from our country!!! By Ivan ·  Posted on Apr 14, 01:37 PM
  4. Wow I didn’t know I was a Right-Winged extremist for wanting the laws of this country enforced. If someone is in this country illegally they should be deported now. Now I hate to tell everyone this but there is in place right now “a path to citizenship” and millions upon millions have followed it, they followed the rules. They didn’t break the law and then cry how unfair it is. Basically what the illegal aliens are saying is that we’ve broken to law for so long that the law doesn’t apply to us. But what is unfair are the people who break our laws and want to step to the front of the line ahead of the millions of people who are following the rules.

Yes I’ve heard the stories how children are having to choose between staying in the US or going with their parents to a country they’ve never been too, and children who were brought into the US illegally and now face being deported to a country they don’t remember, but who’s to blame for that? The parents, had they followed the rules they wouldn’t have this problem.

I would deport all 12 million NOW and let the millions of people who are waiting in line to come in the US.

What we should do and should have done a long time ago, was pass a law that simply stated that if you employee an illegal aliens the company and the president of the company will be fined 10 times the state or federal minimum wage, whichever is greater, per man-hour worked. Suddenly an illegal alien isn’t cheap labor; an illegal alien is a huge fine waiting to happen. And before you say illegal aliens take jobs Americans won’t do, I hate to tell you this but most of the people who take the jobs Americans won’t do are legal aliens or Americans.

  5. I do not consider myself to be a right wing extremist at all! I fully support President Obama in most things and would call myself way more liberal than conservative on issues ranging from abortion to gay marriage to enforcing separation of church and state. On this issue I must say I am conservative. Round up all the illegals and their children at all costs, no amnesty, absolutely no government help. For those immigrants who are here legally I believe they should be forced to learn the English language and USE it! There are all kinds of government run programs that teach English. I believe being fluent should be a prerequisite for staying in this country.

  6. From:
    http://www.immigrationpolicy.org/images/File/factcheck//EconomicsofCIRFullDoc.pdf

“They are ineligible for almost all Federal public assistance programs and most major Federal-state programs.” Legalization would draw all of these currently undocumented workers into the tax system, and make these programs work the way they were intended.”

Yes, as in Socialist vote for assistance… This issue is not a “right wing” issue; although the current Administration will make sure that the bi-partisan vote against Amnesty will be claimed as partisan…

  7. What the heck is wrong with you conservatives that are upset about right wing extremism comments? Do you understand what they are according to FBI? Why are you trying to turn it into some conspiracy by liberals to target conservatives?

Lets not forget this was released under Bush not Obama so no blaming him.

    http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terrorism2002_2005.pdf

FBI Report on Terrorism 2002 – 2005 released in 2007.

“The terrorism preventions for 2002 through 2005 present a more diverse threat
picture. Eight of the 14 recorded terrorism preventions stemmed from right- wing extremism, and included disruptions to plotting by individuals involved with the militia, white supremacist, constitutionalist and tax protestor, and anti- abortion movements.”

“The majority of domestic terrorism incidents from 1993 to 2001 were attributable to the left-wing special interest movements the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Right-wing extremism, however, primarily in the form of domestic militias and conservative special interest causes, began to overtake left-wing extremism as the most dangerous, if not the most prolific, domestic terrorist threat to the country during the 1990s. In contrast to the ALF and the ELF, which have pursued a philosophy that avoids physical violence in favor of acts of property damage that cause their victims economic harm, right-wing extremists pursued a qualitatively different method of operation by targeting people.”
