NAM Round Table
The NAM Round Table consists of news, insights, visions, ramblings and rants from the writers at New America Media.
[ filed under: immigration conflict ] Long Island Wins, a multimedia hub of pro-immigrant organizing in Long Island, has put together a video series in honor of Marcelo Lucero, the Ecuadorean immigrant killed by a gang of teenagers who routinely engaged in a cruel sport they termed “beaner jumping.” Lucero was killed Nov. 8, 2008 near the train station in Patchogue, a seaside town in Suffolk County on eastern Long Island. His death focused attention on the anti-immigrant rhetoric popular with some eastern Long Island politicians. Activists accuse local politicians of fanning anti-immigrant sentiment for political gain. One of the articles I wrote for New America Media about Lucero’s death was titled “Who is to Blame for Marcelo Lucero’s Murder?” (also see a more recent blog post: “Advocates Confront Wave of Hate Crimes in New York Area”). Below is one of the videos originally posted by Long Island Wins, in which Joselo, Marcelo Lucero’s brother, speaks out about his brother’s death and the issues the incident stirred up. The anniversary was commemorated by a candlelight vigil on Saturday in Patchogue. comments |
