On July 7, 2007, after millions of votes were tallied worldwide, Petra was named one of New Open World Corporation’s New Seven Wonders of the World. The Monastery, Petra’s largest monument, dates from the first century BC. The Nabataeans who built it worshipped the Arab gods and goddesses of the pre-Islamic times as well as few of their deified kings. On December 6, 1985 Petra was designated a World Heritage Site.
