Indonesian Artist Remembers Atrocities

Indonesian Artist Remembers Atrocities
They Give Evidence by haruspex.

As an Indonesian of Chinese descent, and having experienced the state-induced persecution of family members during the 1965-66 massacre that initiated the Soeharto regime, artist Dadang Christanto has a great empathy for the countless others who have suffered racial discrimination and systematic violence. Sixteen oversized male and female figures, symbolising victims of past atrocities, stand with outstretched forearms in poses indicative of funerary processions offering evidence of recent killings.

On Sep. 9, 2007, Indonesia’s Supreme Court awarded the former dictator Soeharto 1 trillion rupiah ($129.6 million ) in damages in a lawsuit he brought against Time magazine, a court official said. (source: Sydney Morning Herald)
