The white sands at Nubra Valley, Ladakh, India are both inviting and forbidding. In the winters, the sand gets in your eyes and the bone-chilling cold is penetrating. The town of Hunder in Nubra Valley is close to Siachen glacier, about 80kms away. Supplies to the Indian army have to pass through Hunder to reach the soldiers stationed at the glacier.

On Sept 19, 2007, India begins an initiative that allows a group of tourists to visit the Siachen glacier in the disputed region of Kashmir for the first time, despite objections by Pakistan. Pakistan fears that the trekkers and future travellers, would, in effect, undercut their claims to the Siachen area. Thousands of soldiers from both countries have occupied the Siachen glacier for more than two decades. Source: VOA
