Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice

Eid Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice

An ox is readied for the slaughter during the Muslim high celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. This day caps off the hajj, a traditional religious pilgrimage to Mecca that occurs on the 10th day of the last month of the Islamic calendar. This is usually during the months of November or December.

The hajj is a celebration of the tests and triumphs of the Prophet Abraham in Islam. One-third of the animal’s meat is consumed by direct family, while the other two-thirds are given away to friends and the poor Islamic residents of the community, respectively.

Karachi, Pakistan.
