Naga Sadhus on their way to have 1st Shahi Snana of Ardh Kumbh at Sangam5 by ashishkar. Allahabad, India. Sangam is a site of pilgrimage in Allahabad, India where three rivers meet – the Ganges, the Jamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. The rivers converge but their colors do not mix. It is believed by bathing at this confluence, one receives strength and freedom. Pilgrims participate in “Shahi Snana” (“royal bath”) on Makar Sankranti, the day that many Indian farmers celebrate the ascension of the sun and beginning of the harvest season. This is also typically a time to remember and celebrate ancestors of years past, while turning towards the new challenges of the days ahead and leaving behind the past, similar in some ways to New Year’s resolutions.
Makar Sankranti by Sirensongs. Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, India. The mother of the earth, or Saraswati Maa, as she is known by some, is also commemorated during this festival, which includes generous distribution of sweet treats, cooked by Indian women.
