Cambodian Deportees

Cambodian Deportees

Stuart Isett has documented the lives of young Cambodian men in the United States for 15 years, most recently following the path of some 200 who have been deported back to Cambodia since 2002. These Cambodians are not illegal immigrants, and in fact were first welcomed to the U.S. as refugees and offered the opportunity to obtain citizenship. Largely due to illiteracy and fear of the legal system, most never did, believing nonetheless that they were “permanent” residents. Now they are being returned to a country few know and, indeed, some had never set foot in.
