Gays to Marry in Nepal

Who thought you’d see this headline?

California voters reject same sex marriage.

Nepal SC approves same-sex marriage.

Even as the California Supreme Court agrees to hear if Prop 8, supporters are threatening to recall the Supreme Court justices if they repealed Prop 8.

Meanwhile in Maoist-ruled Nepal, the Apex court has said the government needs to formulate necessary laws to guarantee full rights to gays, including the right to same-sex marriage. These Maoists once told Sunil Pant, gay activist in Nepal, that gay rights were just a bourgeois idea, and there wouldn’t be any need for them in the New Nepal.

Over in India, the Supreme court is getting ready to pass a verdict on Sec 377 that criminalizes homosexual sex. And the justices have been giving the government lawyers a hard time as they try to justify keeping the ban on the books.

The world is turning upside down.

Gays from South Asia once used to seek asylum in the United States.

Now Californians might have to head to Nepal to get married in the shadow of the Himalayas.

Or the Marriage Equality movement can have a new slogan – Ain’t no Mountain High Enough!

  1. Yes, it is. The world is changing. When it is night is South Asia, it was then day in America and now it’s night in US and it’s now getting brighter in Asia.
Is this a challenge for America or the praise for Nepal ?
