Southland Digest
The Southland Digest is a weekly summary of highlights gleaned from a myriad of ethnic press based in Southern California, arguably the largest ethnic media market in the country. The aim is to provide a glimpse of the lives, the conversations, and the perspectives of this multicultural population vis a vis national, state, and local issues. Occasionally the writer might venture beyond the borders of SoCal to other territories and topics. The digest is produced by NAM Southern California Director Julian Do.
Can Gender Violence Be Equated To Terrorism?

Apparently terrorism, though been around a long time, has no clear universal definition. People generally understood terrorism as a calculated use of fear and violence to inflict injuries and deaths to a population. In this sense, Lisa Sharlach, a Political Science professor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, argues that rape and other gender violence should be equated to terrorism. Published in the March issue of Critical Studies on Terrorism journal, Sharlach’s article challenges the Hudood Ordinance, a legal law in Pakistan providing protection to men in rape-charged cases. She believes this law has amounted to state-sponsored violence against women in nations like Rwanda, Bangladesh, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
