Sex for Dummies

I remember watching some documentary on public broadcast television a few years ago about a city (it may have been Texas) where the young people in a particular area were taught only abstinence education and nothing about the alternatives to safe sex.

The film showed how many young females had become pregnant because there was no push for the use of condoms, and other forms of safe sex being taught to high school students.

I may be jaded by the knowledge of safe sex because I live in the liberal city of San Francisco, so I can’t really understand what goes on in other places in the country. But when a study comes out saying one in every four teenage girls in America are infected with a sexually transmitted disease, I think I have the right to be a little concerned/scared.

You would think that by 2008 safe sex would be kind of a universal notion – sadly that isn’t the case. We can send a man to the moon but we can teach them to put on a condom.

But you can’t totally blame the people who are passing these STDs around. If the knowledge isn’t available to them they can’t exactly transform into an all knowing safe sex guru over night.

On the flip side if the knowledge is available and every 1 in 4 teenage girls are carrying an STD then statistics like this seem way too broad for it to be directed at just a certain population of teenage girls. Obviously, the spread of STDs is more than just the education of sex.
