[ filed under: technology youth ] These days everyone’s addicted to something. And it doesn’t always have to be drug related. A study was put out in March by Solutions Research Group detailing why many Americans suffer some a sort of “disconnected anxiety” from being far away from text message enabled, Internet capable, and beloved CrackBerry devices. The study details how people feel when they are not able to get access to online devices. With words like dazed, empty, panic, tense inadequate being used – geez – sounds like the side affects you hear on those drug commercials on T.V. Much of the anxiety comes from feeling like people are missing out on —well—- everything news, information, and feel like they’re out of the loop because they aren’t connected. There were some days where I would forget to bring my cell phone with me and I felt so relieved not having to check my messages every few minutes, or log on to my e-mail account to see if anything important was sent my way. But I do often have that feeling that if I don’t check my e-mail I’ll miss something really important and end up kicking myself later. Unfortunately we are a very digital centered society now. Young people seem to be more on the cusp of the tech crave than most adults these days (not counting Steve Jobs of course) and who are probably more likely to get caught up in the anxiety web. The use of text messaging and Facebook has become a hub for non-verbal communication and a reason for young people to develop an addictive habit for checking their phone every time their cell phone flickers. Just watch, I bet they’re gonna produce some kind of drug to curb technology anxiety, which they’ll have a commercial for it during every episode of Jeopardy |
