World Gangsters or World Protectors?

In recent news Bush backs Colombia as troops near border, as ...Troops in Ecuador and Venezuela continued to reinforce their borders… “I told the President that America fully supports Colombia’s democracy,” said President Bush. He continues on to say “We firmly oppose any acts of aggression that could destabilize the region. I told him that America will continue to stand with Colombia as it confronts violence and terror and fights drug traffickers.’

He’s made it clear that we’re behind our allies all the way and this isn’t the first time we’ve backed up another country, wrong or not. So doesn’t that makes us heroes? World protectors? Or does it make us bullies? World Gangsters? Well, I guess it all depends at how you look at it. Most of the time the American government feel that they are doing the right thing not only for our country but for the other countries involved too.

We’re gangster. We got our turf and we got our allies. We protect our allies from anyone who tries to bother them. Anybody that steps on our turf, we’re checking them at the door- with their name, birth date, affiliations and all. If they mess with us—we’re retaliating. Come to think about it, America really wouldn’t be a good example for the young ones, now would we? But we are gangsters; demanding exclusive devotion from all its members, cause being a traitor is illegal and will get you killed or pushed into exile. We don’t play, waltzing into anybody’s turf as we please. We have the most sophisticated, up to date types of weapons. No doubt we take care of our own, consanguinity or not.

We’re protectors. Who are the first people you call when something goes wrong? America. Whether it is for money or support; the people want us on their side. We protect the little countries that need help. We protect human rights of the people now and the future generations. We stand up for what we believe in and we don’t give up. We’re kind of stubborn in the sense. People always like to point out our flaws but we aren’t all bad, just a bit imperfect, just a bit stubborn, and just a bit stupid at times… made you think I was talking about you for a moment there, now didn’t I? No country is perfect and anyone expecting us to be is just lost in a world of unrealistic dreams and I pity them for that.

America is like one of those stereotypical popular kids who are mean to more than half of the school but the student body still kisses up to them. But then, for a moment you see the nice human side of the popular kid and you wonder who that person is and what happen to the villainous person that you came to know—love and hate. America is confusing, but hey, we’re America, we don’t need to explain ourselves… I guess that’s the kind of attitude that got people questioning our seniority, and sincerity in the first place. I guess we can only blame ourselves for the reputation we are known by.

So, what is America? I say America is a world of radicals. Radicalizing countries, all over the world including its self, work for a change. I don’t think we can categorize America into good or bad, protector or gangster. We’re just a country that is trying to make change by meeting opposition, causing views to be changed or formed, and making people hate and envy us – because the greatest always are.

  1. Personally, I find this article to be one of the worst pieces of journalism that I have ever read. In a manner that can only be described as redundant, it seems like Cottonham repeats the same statements over and over again by means of trite phrases. However, these “statements” weren’t even good the first time; not to mention that they are not worth repeating in a superflous manner either…
