One Hypocritical Nation Under God

With some sleepless late nights plowing through America’s history books I’m pretty sure it would be fairly easy to build a pretty solid case of rampant hypocrisy that has become the foundation for much of our country’s history. But the most recent turn of events that pushed my buttons was the weekend shooting and death of an abortion doctor in Kansas.

Dr. George R. Tiller has been a target of anti-abortion activists since the late 80’s. In 1993 Tiller was shot in the arms, and in 1986 his clinic was bombed. He was shot and killed as he attended Reformation Lutheran Church Sunday morning.

There is a vast difference from being Pro-Life supporter and Pro-Life supporter who has no qualms about shooting people and bombing clinics. If that’s the case, you’re more pro-stupidity than you are Pro-Life.

How do you justify that? How do you justifying gunning someone down in the defense of life while taking one in the process?

Murder is general is just so senseless. But taking a life to essentially save a life is like trying to spin wool into gold, or trying to put a square peg into a circular hole – it ain’t going to work.

During the Bush Administration, I recall the heated discussion that the Supreme Court was considering dismantling Roe v. Wade – which currently makes abortion a Constitutional right. But following the election of President Barack Obama and his support for a woman’s right to choose—the overturning of Roe. V. Wade has yet to be determined.

Now, the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court has brought the abortion discussion back to the table prior to her confirmation proceedings. Sotomayor’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court may potentially change the political landscape of today and give the final say on Roe v. Wade.

Maybe. Big maybe.

The death of Dr. Tiller is a sad reminder of the … there’s no easy way to put this … stupidity of people who think pulling a trigger is the way to put an end to things they oppose. Did the guy think that by killing Tiller all abortions would cease; that the Nation would see the reasons in his actions and come together and make abortion illegal?

Senseless acts of violence like these only make things worse, for both anti-abortion and pro-choice alike.

All in all, no one comes out ahead, and the debate goes on.

  1. You are wrong. Violence works. Ask the muslim community. Before they started diving airplanes into buildings, blowing themselves up on trains and hacking peoples heads off on video, nobody paid them much attention. Now we employ tens of thousands of people to spy on them, have million-dollar outreach programs and spend endless column inches discussing their ‘grievances’. Murder works, violence works.
