YO!
YO! is a collection of short pieces by the writers at Youth Outlook!
I am fairly sure everyone has had one of those experiences where they get extremely hyped for a movie after seeing the preview. They anticipate the movie and stake out its release date. Finally, the day comes when they go to see it and the movie is…utter crap. This was my experience with Public Enemies. A movie with an all-star cast like this just reeks of Oscar winning performance. I went to the movie theater and happily forked over my $10 to see what I expected to be a great movie. The movie starts off fairly explosive with a prison break. The movie transitions into John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his gang robbing a bank. This leaves you with the impression: badass. These first 30 minutes of the movie set the tone for a great action movie with historical background. That would have been the case if the movie just ended there. However, the movie nose-dives into random banter and bad camera angles. I know, I sound like a typical male who is all about explosions and gunfights, but this is a gangster movie. I want badass scenes with a fast paced story that makes sense. The movie did not make sense. At no point in the movie could I say to myself, “I am following this plot and I can clearly see character development.” Not once could those words escape my mouth. Maybe my intellect is inferior, or I just wasn’t watching close enough. I can see how the latter is true, because at one point I found myself almost about to fall asleep. The movie uses very dark lighting and shaky camera angles. Combine this with the cool interior of the theater and it’s like they were setting me up to go to sleep. The best part of this movie was one scene where John Dillinger (Depp), walks into a police prescient and walks around a room full of cops that were all assigned to finding and arresting him. That was the most badass thing I have ever seen. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to redeem the movie. After that the movie continued its crawling storyline the movie clocks in at two hours and 23 minutes, and is surely not worth paying 10 bucks to see. Stay far, far way from this one. comments |

this was depp’s first badass character since he became a father. i have been anticipating the film’s release since early may, and -unfortunately – i mostly agree with the above criticism. but check out the book if you’re into reading (burrough, 2004). i’m 1/3 of the way through, and it’s much grittier than the movie.
By jetchn · Posted on Jul 9, 03:46 AMI TOTALLY agree. i thought this movie was going to be pretty good, but it just got predictable and i stopped caring about the movie, and was happy to leave. Its good to hear someone with the same experience.
