YO!
YO! is a collection of short pieces by the writers at Youth Outlook!
[ filed under: youth immigration ] American Apparel is one of the most controversial mainstream companies with the CEO Dov Charney being slapped with numerous sex suits. This isn’t much of a surprise when one looks at the stores’ ads – many of AA employees are in all-sorts of revealing/compromising positions. But one thing that can be said about the company is that they have actually taken a stance on immigration when many refuse to go there, which includes their “Legalize LA” campaign calling for a legalization of undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles. (With that said, having the most sexualized company taking a stance on immigration is another post for another day). But AA has been known for paying well-above average, and giving healthcare and stocks to employees. But right now things are drastically crumbling, AA is firing close to 2,000 of its employees after an investigation turned up discrepancies in the documents staff presented upon being hired. Charney protested these firings awhile back. Apparently, firing is better than the workplace raids that took place under the Bush administration, that divides and tears up families. But they are still devastating an already crumbling economy. But now, Dov Charney has posted a letter on his website: I am deeply saddened by the fact that many of you will be leaving the company over the next few days and weeks. Many of you have been with me for so many years, and I just cry when I think that so many people will be leaving the company. As many of you know, we have been marching for immigration reform since 2001. Although some of you are leaving the company, I want you all to know that when you are able to get your immigration papers in order, you will be given priority treatment, in terms of being interviewed for future positions with the company. I am deeply disappointed that the Obama administration has failed to bring about immigration reform. Whereas I know he has the intention to do so, getting the job done is another story. Let’s not forget that George Bush wanted to bring about immigration reform, but could not get it done. Ironically, the rallying cry of the Obama campaign was the words of Cesar Chavez, “Yes we can” or “Si se puede”, which inspired so many people, particularly Latinos in the recent election. It is my belief that immigrants bring prosperity to any economy. They become motivated workers, and they sometimes become motivated business owners like me. They bring fresh ideas, optimism, and passion to any economy and they help contribute to a prosperous future. Click here to read the entire letter. AA’s over-sexualized branding is a tough one to support, but Dov Charney has put his neck out for this issue more than most mainstream companies have and it is easy to agree with the closing statement of his letter: The firings “will not help the economy, will not make us safer.” comments |

From one Good American to another, thank you for your efforts to help these good defenseless human beings!
January 2010 will be the two year anniversary of the E-verify Law, the I.C.E. Program, the U.S. Recession, followed by the Global recession, followed by a Resurgence of Racism & Hatred worse than the 1960’s!This Racism & Hatred has been allowed to fester far to long, the entire country is up in arms over immigration, when instead we should all be standing together against the real terrorists that attacked us all!
These hard working Hispanic people are our brothers we should act accordingly!
They can not simply be called or classified as illegal, they are good hard working people, mainly family units consisting of citizens & un-documented’s!
An 1840’s French Historian said: “America is great because it is good, when it ceases to be good it ceases to be great.”
I as you don’t always take the easiest road, however I always take the one that I believe is RIGHT! No matter how hard!
Stand tall Mr. Charney!
You deserve to!
America was built on far better principles than the E-verify Law & I.C.E. Program, especially after knowingly allowing these people to be here for so many years, take roots own homes & have partially legal families!
By David Nichols · Posted on Sep 30, 05:22 PMI believe in controlling our borders, however what has been done to the people that were already here has been notheing less than E-vil!
that was soooo long ago
By keepup · Posted on Sep 30, 05:52 PMTo prevent cataracts from worsening, wash your eyes in triphala tea, says Vasant Lad, B.A.M.S., M.A.Sc., director of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (Triphala is a powder made from the fruits of three Indian trees and is available in Indian pharmacies and some health food stores
. To order by mail, please refer to the resource list on page 634.)
Here’s how Dr. Lad says to use the tea: Boil one teaspoon of triphala in a cup of water for three minutes. Allow the tea to cool, then gently—without disturbing the sediment—strain it through a double layer of cheesecloth. Make sure no particles of powder remain in the strained tea. Then put the tea in an eye cup (available in most pharmacies) and use it as an eyewash, exposing the open eye once or twice to the tea.
Wash your eyes with triphala tea every day, up to three times a day, suggests Dr. Lad. He says your eyes will be soothed, strengthened and cleansed. But, he cautions, this treatment is not a substitute for medical care; you should be sure to consult with your doctor before trying it.
By Brittanicus · Posted on Sep 30, 06:08 PMI support immigration resrictions. The United States already takes in more immigrants than the entire world combined. We don’t need anymore people.
By Ho Le · Posted on Oct 1, 07:39 AMOh, I think they can easily be called and labeled as “illegal” because that is what they are! Did ICE tell this idiot CEO that he had to fire ALL his immigrant workforce??? NO! Just the I-L-L-E-G-A-L ones. The failure of Latino advocacy groups to separate legal from illegal immigrants when making their racist arguments will be their downfall. Dave, you are an idiot. Latinos who are citizens of the USA and who put their country first above their ethnicity are my brothers. The rest of them? Not at all.

Pass a comprehensive immigration bill! Millions are suffering. God and history will judge us for our brutal treatment of fellow human beings.Disgrace! By Ivan · Posted on Oct 1, 12:56 PM
It’s nice to hear that there is another side to Dov Charney. One that is compassionate and principled.
His photo essay with the workers is touching as well.

By Fendo · Posted on Oct 1, 01:56 PMbad laws need to be changed!
alcohol was illegal during prohibition.
it was once legal to enter united states by passing inspection at ellis island and paying $8 fee, now it’s not.
it was once illegal for police to enter your home without warrant, now it’s not.
you see, laws change. why not change immigration law as well?
