YO!
YO! is a collection of short pieces by the writers at Youth Outlook!
According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, the FDA approved meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring. The first thought that popped into my mind was “Who would ever want to eat cloned animals? That’s just WEIRD!” But now, as I begin to think about it, maybe cloning animals actually help solve on the of major problems I believe we face today: World Hunger.
However, the vibe I got from the Chronicle story made it seem as cloning would be used for major food corporations, such as Kraft or Dannon, to be sold in your local supermarket.
But if given the choice between real meat and cloned meat, I would think most people would choose to go with the real thing, as long as it’s available. But in places like Africa or India, some of the poorest countries in the world, maybe the idea of cloned animals would be welcomed. These animals could provide the poor not only nourishment from the meat on their bodies, but could also be used for domestic labor. The nutrition that these animals would provide might cure the many deaths that occur due to malnutrition. These animals could help cultivate the land so that the poor could also start earning an income through farming. Or these families could make dairy products from the milk of cloned cows and sell that for money. Who knows, maybe cloning could be the solution to end world hunger.
