Nationality vs. Religion

Whenever you take any standardized test at school, the only thing to look forward to is bubbling in all those circles. Before doing the test, one must fill out the never-ending questions about the students – parents education, grade, gender, and alas ethnicity. I know of many who skip that section and just bubble in “None of the above” to avoid having to pick between their mixed ethnicities. But in the San Francisco Chronicle according to a 2006 www.pewglobal.org Attitudes Survey, “When asked to choose between religion and nationality as their primary identity, 42 percent of them said, French first, Muslim second.” Now I’m wondering, why would you want to pick between your religion and your nationality? And why is there even a survey that makes you pick between the two? I must say, I’m disappointed in the Muslim French population for picking their French identity over their Muslim one, but it angers me to actually have something that requires you to pick between the two. To me it seems as if the people conducting the survey had no morals or ethics in conducting the survey. Why not just go out and ask Christian Americans to choose between their country and religion. I mean I’ve heard of nations being united through religion, but France is from being a country where Muslims bring unity among the French population. Currently, the situation is quite the opposite there and in the rest of Europe. Overall, I’m disappointed in both the conductors of the survey and the Muslims who prioritized their nationality over their religion. Forty two percent is a large number, and all I can hope for is that the numbers don’t increase in the future. – Maahum Chaudhry
