Gag Me With A Giant Heart Shaped Candy

It is really no surprise that February 14th is the Hallmark out of all holidays, next to Christmas; it is probably the biggest celebration of love sugarcoated in vast amounts of materialism. It is even less of a surprise that there are people who adore V-day and others who despise it enough to silently snarl at the couples lip locked on every street corner.

Though most of us wouldn’t necessarily take to the street to protest the celebration a group of Hindu nationalist political group Shiv Sena in India protested the day of love by burning Valentine’s day cards and chanting “People who celebrate Valentine’s Day should be pelted with shoes!” No joke. In the protest, Shiv Sena claimed that V-day deluded the young people of their country with ideals of marrying young and divorcing shortly after.

Luckily, not everyone who is in love or out of love takes the day too seriously. Not too long ago a Census report was released that stated about 51% of women in the U.S. are single. Some greeting card companies smart enough to jump on the single-livin’ bandwagon long enough to cash in on both sides of the spectrum.

A few popular greeting card websites have fairly amusing Anti-V day greet cards, let it be a rant on how horrible Valentie’s day is, or shooting a couple arrows at Cupid himself. All very satisfying in the ‘to hell with Valentine’s day’ state of mind – though it is a little strange that the organization that has spent most of its time catering to the love-sick has now has a market for the slightly bitter. But I guess all is fair in love and marketing.
