[ filed under: entertainment women ] Sex can sell just about anything. I’ve seen it sell car tires, jeans, and perfume. But there is one thing that irks me about the whole notion of sex being a selling point in today’s industry is that when it comes to portraying females there is such a large sexual bias that talking about it makes me feel like a righteous feminist. I watched Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End last week, and one of the big reasons why I liked the movie was before the female character Elizabeth Swann played by Kiera Knightly. Now, I’m going to try and not give away any major spoilers but after watching the movie I realized why I liked it so much. Many of the more recent movies released have had such lame female heroines. When I say ‘lame’ I really mean flat. Movies like Charlie’s Angels and Tomb Raider try and promote…dare I say it…girl power but fail in representing a well rounded female without constantly overloading them in sexual innuendo. Even though Knightly character does have her moments of sex, and love complicated relationships she does get to kick some ass and inspiring scenes, which I did appreciate. Though a large part of female society has become defined by their look and swagger, I look forward to other movies where the females aren’t flat, boring, self obsessed characters who are defined mainly by the men they love and their makeup drawer. -Eming Piansay |
