Free Speech : To Have, and Have Not

Free speech is the simplest, yet most complex you will come across in your life.

Journalists of today have come head to head with free speech. Especially the more out spoken writers on the left and right side of the political spectrum get their fair share of whipping from their counterparts.

Last week a student newspaper at Colorado State University that headlined their editorial page “Taser this … F—k Bush.” The uncensored headline was in response to the freedom speech issues that were raised last week when a University of Florida student was tasered by police after trying to ask Senator John Kerry a question during his speech.

Since the editorial’s release The Rocky Mountain Collegian publication has lost many of its advertising customers, forcing the newspaper to cut back on salaries and has ultimately put the Editor in Chief’s job on the line.

How is it that free speech can cost so much? Maybe this is an idealistic take on what the 1st Amendment stands for, but having an opinion that does not literally read —“lets go out and burn down the White House” – doesn’t explain why the headline is making so many people mad. I see “F—K Bush” every other day, tagged on buildings, walls, and bathroom stalls.

The fact that this is a school publication and the circulation is probably concentrated mostly to the Colorado area does not mean “F—K Bush” will insight a riot on the White House lawn. This one incident is a thump nail on a wall of journalists who have spoken out against the Bush Administration and have taken an opposite stance in comparison to their right leaning counterparts.

Sadly, The Rocky Mountain Collegian may end up getting their wish with their “Taser this…” headline – their choice to speak out on the matter may be the beginning of their end. Not to mention a reminder that Free Speech costs $1.50, a bag of chips, and your soul.

  1. yes, and KUSA abridged someone else’s right to free speech saying that the speaker “is clearly impaired” whatever that means to the news announcer in their rebroadcast of a story in which they reported that a man calling about not knowing where he was (perhaps abducted and beaten which would account for the slowness of the speaking on the part of the person whom channel 9 news claimed they had the voice of them calling 911—all unverified by the viewers of course). The man who made the telephone call that they claim was from 911 was unavailable for comment. In other words the media violated that alledged 911 caller’s rights by not allowing that man the right to free speech and the right to free speech to attest whether or not he made that call or whether or not the gadget-minded media cut and spliced acting or secret tape recordings over time. Basically channel 9 news team again voiced over the life of one of their targets Because the personnel at channel 9 news have been caught deliberately lying, their credibility is minimal and they are fulfilling their plan to harm the community via their nuscience reporting. Suppose that man was indeed abducted and beaten? Channel 9 news did a disservice to him and made themselves look like accessories to the situation as well as placing further obstacles before him to address and he is not paid to address the obstancles they present before him. Channel 9 news needs to improve its conduct and stop causing situations to happen in the community that they then want to exploit and further harm their targets—their victims. The backgrounds of the channel 9 news team and the crimes they were caught on camera and on tape recording committing explains the reason for their lowballing the public and targeting persons who caught them committing crimes (Channel 9 news works closely with the police departments and the police departments hire many people who have committed crimes but where not prosecuted or whose family members committed crimes. It is also the undiclosed background profile of many of their elected politicians. When people kidnap and say they are going to kill the kidnappee if the Colorado Congressional delegation is not entirely composed of members of the Gotti family and in-laws, well….!
