[ filed under: entertainment culture ] Raise your hand if you watch stupid shows? A stupid show is defined as a show, that after viewing it, the viewer in turn, feels stupid. If you need a clearer example, raise your hand if you watch “Flavor of Love”? No? Liar! We have all watched Flavor Flav act like an ass, and loved it. Well, if you pay attention, right at the end of “Flavor of Love” or “I Love New York”, in the end credits on the screen pops up “Mindless Entertainment”, the name of the production company founded by Mark Cronin. I suppose the name, “Scholarly Viewing”, was already taken. As if we didn’t know that 12 out of 10 shows on VH1 are stupid, “Mindless Entertainment” produces all of our favorite celebreality shows. Need I say more? One show that on the surface would indeed appear to be another stupid show, has a less obvious effect. After watching an episode of the animated series “Boondocks” on Adult Swim, the viewer may find that there is actually a message and meaning in the midst of the shows fun and exaggerated satire. The show and original Boondocks comic strip creator, Aaron McGruder ensures us that this is no mistake, “I think that the strip [challenges] people to think differently…[I want] to have people questioning what they’re told on a daily basis.” Granted, McGruder’s intent is lost among those just looking for a good “stupid” show, but for those of us who enjoy the charm of Charm School mixed with the edge of a Kanye West album, Boondocks is a nice hybrid between plain ole’ dumb and humble genius. I will be tuning in for the premiere of the 2nd season of the cartoon on October 8th at 11:30 pm, on Adult Swim; I’m lying, love the show, but I’m not staying up that late to watch the premiere, I’ll Tivo it.
