Recently I’ve heard that there is speculation that MUNI will be giving free rides all year round. According to one of my friends, the reason for this is that the amount of money MUNI gets from its fares is relatively equal to the cost of counting that money and enforcing payment of those fares, resulting in that MUNI makes hardly any revenue for itself, even with the recent fare increases.

If this turns out to be true, I, along with many other that I know, would definitely want MUNI to be free not only for a free ride and to be without the worry of paying a fine if we don’t have proof of payment, of which I am guilty of, but it would be really great for the environment as well. If people had the option of free transportation or their cars, I would assume many would take advantage of free transportation and take MUNI, because that would cut down on their gas money and there would be less traffic on the road. And, everyday would be a spare the air day. MUNI has already taken a step towards deterring global warming with their new eco – friendly bus, so why not take that a step further? – Maahum Chaudhry
