Baby Boom

I wasn’t totally surprised when Britney Spears’ little sis announced she was preggers. Not because she just so happens to be Britney’s little sis, but because she’s sixteen years old with sex organs. That should finish tie up all the lingering questions of ‘How this happened.’

I don’t get it. Do adults just think teens just walk through life unknowing to the idea of what sex is? And because of this ignorant assumption the fact that teens would actually have sex ends in people acting all shocked while asking themselves how it happened. I feel like at this point we should have a giant group session on how the birds and the bees work, just to refresh everyone’s memory.

I guess the next question most people would ask is – “Did you have your little fella covered, son?” But we’ll leave that up for the media to exploit every which way.

In the movie Juno, a sixteen year old girl has sex, gets pregnant and with a little bit of humor tries to figure out what to do. What’s hard to do in big, hot topics like this, is coming off to radical. Like gun control or immigration, you can’t take a side without pissing someone off.

Juno looked towards both opinions having an abortion and keeping the baby. When it comes to mainstream audience, teen sex is like a life sentence. With unsafe sex being the big scary metal door into a world of STD’s, HIV and teen pregnancy there’s a lot of hats teen sex gets tossed.

I really think this news, and the movie is a very beneficial learning experience to today’s generation; giving teen girls options that say, ‘Yes you do have a choice. No matter what anyone says, what happens next is up to you’. If anything, maybe a new dialogue on sex can emerge – allowing teens to get more educated on sex, and pregnancy. Too idealistic? Whatever man, if I were pregnant I would appreciate any and all information to help me. No matter what I decided.
