Can You Say -- Sell Out?

I thought MTV had become the hub of bad music and corny music videos. Apparently this stigma is spreading into the pre-previews of movie theatres everywhere.

I went to a couple movies this month and was greeted by a very, very, very long music video done by 3 Doors Down called Citizen Solider. A first timer to the pre-movie musical experience probably wouldn’t realize it wasn’t just a music video till the beginning credits spelled out: National Guard.

Now, I’m not going to start trash talking the National Guard ‘cause they got a band to sell out – I mean – do a song for their commercial. What made me want to gag on my popcorn was the comparison between the National Guard and the American Revolution – which showed the American’s going up against the British Red Coats.

I think the brainstorming for the treatment of the video went something like this. Oh right, let’s compare the National Guard to the American Revolution! Freedom man! They’re totally similar —if you’re sniffing glue.

I don’t see how the American Revolution’s Minutemen can even be slightly compared to the U.S. military of today—pick up a history book and you’ll see why.

I have deep respect the U.S. soldiers, since they put themselves out there and are trying to do whatever they can in the Middle East – it wasn’t like they were the ones that chose to go to war. But when you look at the people who are responsible for the hundreds of men and women in the armed forces who are died during the U.S.’s stint overseas – music videos like these seem to try to put an airbrushed picture of a harsher reality.
